AUTHOR OF BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS
About
I grew up in the country with two brothers and two sisters, and a mom and dad who loved the lot of us. We lived in an old farmhouse near a pond with an island, and attended a two-room schoolhouse a mile down the road.
Much-loved places from my childhood form the setting for my next book, a middle-grade novel called FAST, though the characters came to find me with a story all their own.
Like many country kids, I dreamed of cities. DRUM CITY is my first book, illustrated by the warm and wonderful Vanessa Newton. We met for the first time at our book signing in New York, the greatest city of them all.
I’m a Yale graduate, a winner of the Tassy Walden Award for New Voices in Children’s Literature, and a recipient of the James Marshall Fellowship from the University of Connecticut to support my research for a middle-grade novel set in New Haven in 1925.
Now I live in a red house on a hill on a country road in Connecticut with my college-sweetheart husband, John. Our daughter, Suzanna, lives in Boston, another great city. She kindly shares Lady with us, a sweet spaniel with an ear for a well-crafted sentence.
